Any overtaking move should be a smooth and gentle change of road position, be straight and parallel as you go past the vehicle with a door’s width clearance. The door’s width clearance is important – it doesn’t matter if you go over the white centre line.

Generally do not indicate, unless there is a specific reason (such as someone trying to overtake you). Indicate to do the unexpected, overtaking the parked car is the expected.

If there are approaching vehicles look for their reaction to your moving out, if they don’t react- hold back until they do. If you can’t get through because of oncoming traffic hold back next to the white line at a 2 car length distance so that when you can go you don’t have to steer violently.

Buses – if you see one parked or pulling up in front of you try to overtake it as soon as you can – unless it gives you any reason to think it may move off imminently.

On a dual carriageway where there are parked vehicles: Overtake a single car on the same path as you would on a single carriageway (a smooth and gentle change of road position, be straight and parallel as you go past the vehicle with a door’s width clearance) - but indicate if there is following traffic.

If there is a row of parked cars then change lane completely - Generally indicate to move out to the right but don’t indicate to come back in afterwards, as long as you keep the gap closed (back door) on your left side by starting to move back in as you pass the last parked car
